기차를 이용하는 승객이 적어서 기차에서 내리는 사람이 없을 때
기차가 간이역을 지나치는 경우 기적을 울린 것에서 유래되었습니다.
지금은 인구가 적은 시골 마을이라는 뜻으로도 쓰입니다.
또, 선거 유세 도중 작은 마을에서 잠깐 체류하는것에도 쓰입니다.
특히, 유세를 위해 작은 마을들을 돌아다니는 것을
whistle stop tour라고 합니다.

사전에서 'Tom' 을 찾아보니 '백인에게 순종하는 흑인' 이
라는 뜻이 있던데요. 술 이름 중에서도 'Tom and Jerry' 라
는 말도 있구요.
Tom 이란 이름이 이렇게 좋지 못한 뜻으로 쓰이게 된 그 유
래가 궁금합니다.
- A - 미운 정 가득한 이름,Tom
'Tom' 은 여러분도 잘 알다시피 우리나라의 '철수'라는
이름처럼 미국의 대표적인 남자 이름입니다. 그러다 보니
이름 자체가 흔하고 부르기 쉬워서 좋지 못한 일에 쉽게,
많이 쓰이게 된 것입니다.
이와 함께 Tom 에게는 부정적인 일화들이 붙을만한 일화
들이 많이 있었죠.
11세기 영국에서 과중한 세금으로부터 주민들을 구하기 위
해서 머시아 백작(Earl of Mercia) 의 아내, Godiva 가 남편
과 내기를 했다고 합니다.
그 내기는 알몸으로 백마를 타고서 마을 거리를 달리면, 아
내가 청한대로 세금을 낮추어 주겠다는 것이었습니다.
그러자 Godiva 는 정말로 요구에 응했는데, 그녀가 말을 타
고서 거리를 달릴 때 창가에서 이것을 엿보던 Tom 이라는 재
단사가 장님이 되어버렸다고 합니다.
여기서 'peeping Tom (여자의 벌거벗은 모습을 염탐하는 사
람)' 이란 말이 유래되엇다고 하지요.
또 다른 일화가 있습니다.
성경에서 Tom (우리말 성경에서는 '도마'로 번역) 은 예수
님의 제자들 중에서 특히 의심이 많아서 에수의 부활을 눈으
로 확인하기 전에는 부활의 사실을 믿지 않으려 햇었죠.
위와같은 여러가지 이유로 Tom 이란 이름의 인물과 연관된
좋지 않은 인상이 사람들의 인식 속에 은연중에 자리잡게 되
엇고, 결국 Tom 이란 이름은 그다지 좋지 못한 일에서 사람
들의 입에 자주 오르내리는 이름이 되어버린 듯합니다.
또 다른 예로 '어중이떠중이,모든 사람'이란 뜻으로
'Tom, Dick and Harry' 라는 말도 있고, 숫고양이를 'Tomcat'
라 부르기도 합니다.
말괄량이,왈가닥은 'Tomboy' 라고 하지요.

- 기사단이 한창 번성하던 중세시대에 기사단이 마을에 들어오면
환영하며 성대하게 접대를 했는데, 교황의 실권이 약해진 이후로
마을사람들도 환대는 커녕 냉대를 했다. 반가운 손님이 왔을 때
는 따뜻한 양의 어깨고기를 내 놓았는데 냉대의 표현으로 일부러
먹다 남은 차가운 양의 어깨고기를 내 놓는데서 유래가 되었다.

This town had a lot of spiders called tarantulas.
The people thought that the spiders could kill them.
Fast dancing was supposed to release the spider's poison by making people sweat.

이 마을에는 tarantula라고 불리는 거미가 많이 있었다.

In 1859, a Swiss man named Henry Dunant went to Italy.
He went there on business.
There was a war in the town of Solferino.
Dunant saw the war, and he was shocked.
There were thousands of wounded men.
Nobody was there to take care of them.
Dunant asked the people in the town to help the wounded men.
Later, he wrote a book called A Memory of Solferino.

Unfortunately, in the past 30 years the number of elephants has decreased markedly.
There are a few reasons for this.
Some have died in accidents.
Sri Lanka has many gem pits, and when baby elephants become separated from their parents,
they sometimes fall into one of them.
Other elephants are wounded when they step on spited barriers put up by villagers.
If their wounds become infected, they can die.
They can also die from gunshot wounds because although it is against the law, people try to shoot them.

The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the shouting kills the spirit of the tree.
According to the villagers, it always works.

In some Asian countries water is often taken from a well using a hand
pump. The water is usually clean and safe to drink. In some villages
people use earthen jars that help keep the water cool. On the other hand,
the water for the fields is taken from a number of small ponds or
streams. This water is carried into the fields through a long waterway.

In some villages in many developing countries people obtain their water

The Ndembu people of Central Africa believe that illness is often the
result of the anger of a relative, friend, or enemy towards the patient.
This emotion, they say, causes a tooth to enter the body of the patient
and create disease. The healer calls together the victim's relatives and
friends to watch a ceremony, at the end of which he "removes" the tooth
from the patient's throat, arm, leg, etc. Although the patient and the
villagers know what has happened - that the tooth has been hidden inside
the healer's mouth the whole time, the patient is often cured.

I was born on an island. When I left it at the age of five, I had never
set foot on three-quarters of it. I had recently met a woman born on the
other side of the world from me. But she had visited this island on which
my family had lived for generations. She named a village by the sea and
then went on to describe a view that was unknown to me. I was so ashamed
that I could hardly reply, for I had come to believe that people should
know everything about their homeland.

she may really have felt like a nobody, for few people knew her outside
of her small hometown. But this quiet-living woman became one of
America's best-loved poets after her death. No one is really sure when
she started to write poetry. She tried to get poems published, but
newspapers didn't want them. Finally, two were published in a newspaper,
but the editor changed them and wouldn't even use her name.

A village doctor was very annoyed because people used to stop him in
the street and ask his advice. He has never paid for such services. He
decided to put an end to this. One day, he was stopped by a young man,
who said to him, "I've got a pain in my left side." The doctor said
playfully, "Shut you eyes and stick you tongue out of your mouth." Then
he went away, leaving the man standing in the street with his tongue
hanging out...

The villagers were busy rebuilding their old houses which had been
destroyed during the war. Shouts of joy arose as the villagers saw their
own children returning home after they were freed from the enemy. They
dropped what they were doing and ran out to meet the children, who rushed
on ahead to this joyful reunion. There were tears and laughter.

dressed to an intolerable state of discomfort.

Looking upward, I can see skies splashed with cotton white clouds. The
sun brightens the eastern side of the trees and casts their shadows to
the west. A soft breeze gently rustles the tall clover blossom, not
disturbing the bees gathering nectar from them. A white butterfly
flutters across the yard. Everything seems to be in harmony with one
another.

But as early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had
been on the right track. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the
city of Washington, for which the village of Georgetown was the market
center. When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter
to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting
stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his
butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage of
his icebox, Moore explained, was that farmers would no longer have to
travel to market at night in order to keep their produce cool.

Another early Native American tribe in what is now the southwestern part
of the United States was the Anasazi. By A.D. 800 the Anasazi Indians
were constructing multistory pueblos - massive, stone apartment
compounds. Each one was virtually a stone town, which is why the Spanish
would later call them pueblos, the Spanish word for towns. These pueblos
represent one of the Anasazis' supreme achievements.

Besides living quarters, each pueblo included one or more kivas ―
circular underground chambers faced with stone. They functioned as
sanctuaries where the elders met to plan festival, perform ritual

generation. Some kivas were enormous. Of the 30 or so at Pueblo Bonito,
two measured 20 meters across. They contained niches for ceremonial
objects, a central fire pit, and holes in the floor for communicating
with the spirits of tribal ancestors.
